Threats of School Violence on the Rise

An effective Multi Hazard Emergency Preparedness Plan and Training Program is key.

Campus Safety Magazine reporter Amy Rock provides startling new statistics related to threats of school violence. More than 150 threats were made during the one week after the November 30th deadly shooting at Oxford High School. And just prior to that, during the month of September, there were 151 reports of threats of school violence…five times the amount reported for the same month one year earlier! The article, linked below, provides important details about how issues of mental health contribute to such incidents.

The global pandemic, exacerbated by a polarized political landscape and social unrest, has certainly had an impact on the mental and emotional well being of our students and staff. In fact, the US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy recently published an advisory report on the youth public health crisis. The report is a clear warning about the detrimental effects and the ways in which we can respond. Dr. Murthy states, “The Covid-19 pandemic further altered (young people’s) experiences at home, school and in the community, and the effect on their mental health has been devastating. The future well-being of our country depends on how we support and invest in the next generation.”

Just as with the pandemic, local public school officials are in a very difficult situation when it comes to responding to incidents of violence, real or threatened. All threats need to be taken seriously, and in response, local officials often face the tough question on whether to close schools or keep them open.

One long-term solution has just been announced by Tony Thurmond, Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of California. His plan is to recruit 10,000 more Mental Health professionals. “There is no more important effort that we can support at this time to help California kids. Let us come together to help our students heal, recover, and thrive,” said Thurmond.

It is painfully evident that we all need to do our part to help one another.  It starts simply with caring, respect and emotional intelligence.
