Universal TK: Why Wait Until 2025?

Some Districts, including LAUSD, Expanding TK Now

We can all agree that early childhood education makes a huge difference in the lives of young students, their families, and the community. So it was welcome news when CA recently expanded TK to all 4-year olds. However, the roll-out is paced slowly and won’t take full-effect until 2025.

In some Districts, that’s not good enough.

LAUSD, for example, is “expanding” TK now, especially to low-income students who have no pre-school experience, by opening up 31 new classrooms. Strategically financed through LCFF and COVID-relief funds, the long-term pay-off is larger than a budget issue. The goal is for all students to ready by 3rd grade and giving today’s students every chance possible is a big step in the right direction.

TRiGroup’s Advice: Take every advantage of a good thing and push boundaries wherever possible. In this case, nobody said a District couldn’t start offering TK earlier than the State-adopted timeline. On 9/16, the Coalition for Adequate School Housing (CASH) is offering a special “web-shop” on the issue as it relates to Facilities.
