California Becomes First State in Nation to Announce COVID-19 Vaccine Requirements for Schools

California State Capital

Below are two links to the official announcements from the Office of the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, about the upcoming vaccine requirement for students who want to attend in-person instruction. Here are the quick facts at-a-glance:

  1. This applies to public, charter, and private schools.
  2. The mandate becomes effective when the vaccines receive full approval from the Food and Drug Administration.
  3. The requirement will take effect at the start of the term following full approval of that grade span, to be defined as January 1st or July 1st, whichever comes first. The anticipated date for grades 7-12 is July, 2022.
  4. The vaccine will be added to the list of all other currently mandated vaccines, such as measles, mumps, and rubella.
  5. For school staff, the current “vaccine or test” requirement will be converted to vaccine only.

TRiGroup’s Advice: This won’t take effect for a while, so if you and your school district are in the process of mandating the vaccine locally, keep moving on that. The Governor is expressing his support for those who want to mandate vaccines earlier, just as has already been done in Culver City, LAUSD, Hayward, Oakland, and Piedmont. Be careful to outline and be ready to deliver on your alternatives… whether that be independent study or weekly testing. Independent Study will ultimately be the statewide alternative.
